Ajira Blessing

The Ajira Digital Program, a landmark initiative by the Government of Kenya, aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to effectively reduce the rate of unemployment among the youth and the broader population. This innovative program introduces Kenyans to the vast opportunities available in online work, reinforcing the legitimacy and potential of the digital economy. The primary objective is to empower individuals by providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the online job market, thereby transforming lives and contributing to national economic growth.

Financially backed by the Rockefeller Foundation Africa, the program received a generous grant of 100 million Kenyan shillings. This substantial funding was channeled through the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), which acted as the implementing partner. KEPSA, in turn, engaged several organizations already established in the online work sector to assist in the effective execution of the program. Among these organizations, Daproim Africa was privileged to be selected, providing a unique opportunity to contribute to this transformative initiative.

Our journey with Ajira Digital has been a remarkable experience. The meticulous planning and strategic execution of the program were evident from the onset. To alleviate the pressures of daily commuting for trainees, the program provided accommodation within the training centers. This thoughtful provision ensured that participants could fully immerse themselves in the training without the added stress of travel.

Training sessions were scheduled to commence on the 5th of June 2017. As the day approached, there was palpable excitement among the participants, eager members of the Republic of Kenya who were enthusiastic about the prospects of online work. For many, this was an opportunity to learn new skills and gain a deeper understanding of the digital economy. For others, it was a chance to demystify the concept of online work and explore its potential as a viable career path.

Daproim Africa’s involvement in the Ajira Digital Program allowed us to witness firsthand the transformative power of education and training. The curriculum was designed to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of various online job platforms, digital skills, and the practical knowledge needed to navigate and succeed in the digital workspace. The training encompassed a range of topics, from basic computer skills and internet navigation to more advanced areas such as digital marketing, content creation, and freelance work.

The impact of the Ajira Digital Program extends beyond mere skills acquisition. It has fostered a sense of empowerment and confidence among the participants, enabling them to take charge of their economic futures. The program has also contributed to bridging the digital divide, ensuring that more Kenyans have access to the benefits of the digital economy.

In conclusion, the Ajira Digital Program stands as a testament to the power of strategic partnerships and innovative thinking in addressing unemployment. By leveraging the expertise of organizations like Daproim Africa and the generous support of the Rockefeller Foundation Africa, the program has made significant strides in transforming the employment landscape in Kenya. As we continue to support and participate in this initiative, we remain committed to helping more Kenyans realize their potential in the ever-evolving digital world.
